WSPE's President Corner |
| Welcome to another issue of E-News!
Spring is finally here. If you have not noticed the changes
in the weather, the familiar orange barrels re-appearing along
our state highways should have caught your attention. It is hard
to believe that another WSPE year is almost over. In fact, in
just a couple months your newly elected board of directors will
be taking over the leadership of WSPE. The WSPE Leadership Conference
is scheduled for June 24th in Wisconsin Dells, so mark your calendars.
All chapter and state officers and committee members are encouraged
to attend. Please note that we are still looking for a third Vice
President, so if you are interested in getting involved on the State
Board please let me or another board member know.
The state office and WSPE Board was very active this past month. The highlight of the month was the 2006 Discovery Conference and Governor’s New Product Awards (GNPA) Banquet held on April 13-14 at the SC Grand in DePere, Wisconsin. Many thanks go out to the Fox River Valley Chapter committee members for their efforts in planning and hosting this conference. Although the conference was not well attended, it was well received by those in attendance. Next year’s conference planner (Waukesha Chapter) assures us that they will avoid scheduling the conference near a holiday weekend. On a positive note, the GNPA banquet was a tremendous success with over 110 people in attendance, including Department of Commerce Secretary Mary Burke, to witness the presentation of the awards. Thanks to the effort of Dale Swenson, our GNPA Chair, the program is gaining momentum and recognition. I encourage you to stay tuned to the WSPE E-News for more details on the 2007 Conference.
Next, I would like to thank Lauran Larson, Norm Arendt and Phil O’Leary
and the numerous other volunteers for their efforts that contributed to the
success of the State MATHCOUNTS competition. The final results are posted on
the state website along with description of the State Team that will be
representing Wisconsin at the national competition in Arlington, VA. If you have
not witnessed the excitement of this program, I encourage you to watch for
the highlights of the national competition that will be re-broadcasted on ESPN2
next month. MATHCOUNTS can always use more volunteers at both the chapter and
state levels.
Congratulations to following individuals that received WSPE Recognition Awards:
- Robert O. Parmley, P.E. - WSPE Engineer of the Year
- Keith Nikolay, P.E. – WSPE Young Engineer of the Year
- Philip O’Leary, P. E. – Professional Engineer in Education
- Arnold “Bud” Kehrli, P.E. – Professional Engineer in Industry
- John Davel, P.E. – Professional Engineer in Private Practice
Congratulations to our State MATHCOUNTS Team that will be representing
Wisconsin at the National Competition in Arlington, VA on May 11-14. If you
have not witnessed the excitement of this program, I encourage you to watch
the highlights of the national competition that will be re-broadcasted on
ESPN2 next month.

The 2006 WSPE Discovery Conference |
|
Another WSPE Discovery Conference has come and gone. WSPE
members volunteered much time in 2005 in preparation for the
2006 conference, which was hosted by the Fox River Valley Chapter.
With attendance declining the past few years an attempt was
made to try something different this year.
WSPE worked to coordinate the Discovery Conference with the
Fox River Valley Instrumentations, Systems, and Automation (ISA)
Vendor show, which is held every other year. In addition to working
with ISA, we coordinated the Governor’s New Product Award (GNPA)
banquet and some evening entertainment to create a single great
event held at the SC Grand Conference center in De Pere, Wisconsin.
A lot of time and effort went into finding a two day period
that would pull all these activities together and we finally
settled on Thursday, April 13 and Friday, April 14, with the
awareness that Friday, April 14 was Good Friday. Since many
companies recognize this as a holiday we decided to give it a try,
thinking many WSPE members would be off of work and be able to attend.
The Thursday ISA Vendor show was well represented by instrumentation
and engineering services firms. There was a good turn out by local
professionals and technical employees who were able to meet with
representatives, collect product literature, and obtain business
contacts. Thanks to ISA for the social hour hors d’oeuvres! Thursday
evening was the Governor’s New Product Award ceremony, which tied
in well with the ISA Vendor Show, and had a great turn out.
A buffet breakfast Friday morning was followed by an excellent
lineup of seminar sessions. The first seminar was given by Richard
Pitzner and Wendy Bettermann of
Holmes Murphy legal firm
in Madison, and focused on professional and business legal liability.
The second seminar was presented by Donald Voigt, President of
Energenecs, Inc. in Cedarburg, WI.
Don gave a great talk on professional ethics in the world market based on
his business acumen and world travels, and backed up by business statistics.
Lunch was followed by WSPE officer induction for the new season
and engineer awards. Larry McCarren, Sports Director at WFRV-TV,
was the guest speaker and talked about his experiences as a Green Bay
Packer and sports coverage of the team. Chris Havel, Sports Reporter
for the Green Bay Press Gazette, also came for lunch, and Larry and
Chris held an interesting question and answer period about the Packers
up-coming season.
After lunch the third seminar session was given by Michael Nowak,
President of Coating
Excellence in Wrightstown, WI. Mike gave a very interesting
talk on the success of Coating Excellence based on quality and
innovation, another good example of a successful business in
Wisconsin.
The final seminar was led by Neal Verfuerth, President of
Orion Energy Systems of
Milwaukee and Manitowoc, WI. Neal gave a very compelling power
point presentation on the needs and world benefits of energy
efficient lighting systems in industry.
WSPE greatly appreciates each of the seminar speakers taking
the time to give presentations at the conference, and also staying
to meet talk with members.
WSPE and the Fox River Valley Chapter would very much like to
thank WPS, GAS, Marinson & Eisele, Ayres Associates, River Valley
Testing, Davel Engineering, Dominion – Kewaunee Power, and
Ruekert-Mielke Inc. for sponsoring the event.
Once again the committee members learned many lessons from
this year’s conference. The attendance on Friday was very poor,
so the conclusion was a holiday weekend does not work. Looking
back we find that week days are hard to get off of work and
weekends are important for personal time, so we will take these
things into consideration when planning next year’s conference.
Those who volunteer their time and talent through WSPE will continue
to work at ensuring members receive value for their membership,
and we thank them for it.
David A. Ozarowicz, P.E.

2006 WSPE Leadership Conference – June 24th
in Wisconsin Dells |
| Attention all current and incoming Chapter
and State Officers and Committee Members: The 2006 WSPE Leadership
Conference will be held June 24th in Wisconsin Dells. We will
accomplish two primary tasks at this meeting: we will bring
those of you assuming new positions up to speed and we will
set our goals to move forward in the next year. To do this
requires current outgoing leaders to attend to transfer your
know-how and experience to those taking over your previous
position. This makes your efforts over the last year(s) even
more meaningful by having them continued and advanced rather
than being lost and forgotten. And for those assuming new
positions or continuing on, this is your opportunity to learn
exactly what your roles, responsibilities and goals are for
upcoming year. This will make your time and effort productive
and meaningful, making a valuable contribution that moves
your organization and profession forward rather than wasting
time repeating what someone already did, or becoming stressed
from not knowing what to do and getting behind. Having a clear
picture of what we want to accomplish, and what each of us
is going to do towards those goals will make the year enjoyable
and exciting. Please plan on attending June 24th. Anyone else
interested in becoming involved is also welcome to attend.
